Personal Injury: legal basics for people who have never worked in law

The challenge

New employees join the firm from many backgrounds. On day one they hear words like claimant, negligence and settlement, and they need to understand how a case moves before they can help move one.

My approach

Short and active. Every concept is followed by something to do: match, flip, choose. The module ends by inviting learners to the live session, and the live session opens by refreshing the module, so the two parts work as one.

Part 1

The self-paced module, screen by screen

Learning portal home
1 · Portal. The course lives where new hires already track their onboarding.
Opening question
2 · Hook. A question, not a definition, and a clear time promise.
Short video with a true or false check
3 · Watch and check. A short video, then a true or false that targets a common myth.
Memory game matching legal terms
4 · Key terms. A memory game instead of a glossary.
Interactive map of the people involved
5 · Who's involved. Tap each person to discover their role.
Flip cards for negligence
6 · Negligence. Four flip cards: duty, breach, causation, damages.
Scenario question
7 · Apply it. A short scenario: which element did the store owner fail?
Interactive case lifecycle
8 · Case lifecycle. Eight stages to explore, previewing the live session.
Closing screen with registration
9 · Next step. Learners pick a live session time before they leave.

Part 2

The live session: Maria's case

One car accident, followed from the street to the settlement. Learners explore the evidence, build the case lifecycle together on a shared board, and close with an interactive video review.

Interactive accident scene with evidence points
Explore the evidence: each point links to a concept from the module.
Shared whiteboard with the case lifecycle
Build it together: Maria's case placed stage by stage.
Interactive video with questions
Review and assess: an interactive video with questions.
Recording: facilitating the case lifecycle activity (5 min).
Recording: the interactive video review (4.5 min).

Design choices
1Microlearning: 5–8 minutes, with the time stated up front.
2Practice after every concept, never two screens of reading in a row.
3One case for the whole live session, so new terms always have a story behind them.
4The module hands off to the live session, and the live session points back to the portal.
